I have one thing that always helps me get through the darkest winter months: my love for oranges. When the nights start getting longer in the fall one of the only things that keeps my spirits up is the availability of really good eatin' oranges...not the nasty ones they sell in the summer. Well, I have a new thing to help me through the winter: Golden Gloves in Lowell. If you ever want inexpensive, live-entertainment steeped in history, you have to go to the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on a Tuesday night. The venue, featured in the above picture minus layers of ice and snow, is gorgeous and hearkens back to the days when women work furs to the bouts. There's a lot of drama and excitement at the Gloves. The audience is a lively mix of fans, ring veterans coming back to see old friends, Lowell Sun gals selling the 50/50 raffle tix and the assorted personnel required to put on such an event. Always something to see...and a great way to take your mind off your woes! For three hours you think of only what's happening in front of you.
Pictured above is the New England 1949 Golden Gloves team. In the lower left hand corner is 17 yr old Lawrencian Paul Despres, and in the upper right hand corner is Peter Fuller, son of onetime governor of Massachusetts, Alvin Fuller. Peter spent time training in Lawrence, by the way. There's a documentary in the works on the history of the Golden Gloves, go to this website and read more about it:
