Even a non-fan like myself knows that football was very big in Lawrence during the late 1950s-early 1960s...but I had no idea it was huge as early as the 1920s. I was researching unrelated sports when I came across this Lowell Sun article dated November 24, 1931...check out the roster and look at the colleges/prep schools these guys went to! The top players from both town were top draft picks for the Ivies.
Something else I have learned: great athletes from these towns often played multiple sports. Johnny Broaca, the Yankees draft pick, boxed and played football and (unrelated to this article) Andy Callahan, top NE boxer in his day, played baseball before focusing on boxing.
