In Sunday's Boston Globe: Lawrence, in the news...

Lawrence is in the news for a program devised by 2 LHS students, "Yard and Storefront of the Month" ...in an effort to make the city more beautiful, encourage people to put some effort into maintaining their property and hopefully, give people something nice to look at.

Check out the Boston Globe article here, and I can't but help think that this ties in to yesterday's article about the "broken window" theory, and how Lowell has found success implementing certain aspects of said theory. Keeping up the appearance of a place matters.

Personally, I would love to see some of the empty storefronts on Essex Street put to use, maybe with some art, revolving photography exhibits, pictures of the fabrics that came out of the mills, pictures of furniture that came out of Plycraft for 40 years, "then and now" on restaurants in Lawrence...I could easily go on. Great job on behalf of the 2 LHS interns and the city's Community Development Dept. for coming up with the program. I hope to see some of the winners in the Eagle Tribune. In the meantime, I am going to mine some old pictures I took last summer of some Tower Hill homes in Lawrence:
